My Skin is Like Woah

Here’s the thing, getting older sucks. It’s one thing to be your age and grow another year ‘wiser’, it’s another to feel your age (aches start to ensue) and then it’s a whole different story to look your age. Aging is obviously a fact of life, however looking your age is not. I’m just saying, wrinkled is not one of the things I want to be when I grow up and I doubt you do either.



There’s so much hype out there right now on keeping skin looking fresh and beautiful. We try different products, procedures, follow celebs and their best kept beauty secrets, when what we really need to do is a bit of research and find what works best for us. Look, our skin is there each and every day protecting us from harsh elements such as UV rays from the sun, dirt, as well as germs and toxins. Now by no means am I a professional in skin care, however, I’d like to think that I’ve got a pretty good handle on my personal skin care routine and wanted to share some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.


Wearing sunscreen plays a vital role in skin care management. Most people think it’s only needed when you’re going to the beach or pool, but it’s actually best if you wear it daily and wear an adequate amount. Wearing SPF 30 or higher can help prevent wrinkles, dark spots and signs of cancer.


The right face wash is hard to come by. Find what’s right for your skin type. I recommend face washes that are gentle, won’t strip away natural oils and also remove makeup, such as Micellar Water. For oily, dry or a combination of skin types, I’ve also found Neutrogena products to work well such as Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. It contains an ingredient called salicylic acid which is helpful for the reasons I listed above and doesn’t dry your skin out. Moisturizing is very important to treating acne as moistened skin helps loosen build up inside pores. Friendly tip, spend more on your moisturizer than your cleanser, since the cleanser will eventually be going down the drain.

Now face masks are not just for that luxurious clean feeling. They are an integral part in the skin care regimen by going to the next level in rehydrating skin & clearing up pores. For dry skin, you want a hydrating masks that is high in antioxidants and has anti-aging benefits that help make the skin look fuller. Congested skin is when pores are clogged making your skin tired and prone to blackheads. For this reason, you want a mask with ingredients like clay for clarifying. My current favorite is Avon’s Clearskin Pore Penetrating Black Mineral Mask; it contains oil absorbing mineral clays that remove pore clogging oils. Aging skin needs moisture to help keep that plump appearance around fine lines (such as crow’s feet). Anti-aging masks that typically reduce redness and enlarged pores would be green tea formulas. Make sure that your masks have natural oils like omega 3’s to help nurture your skin, giving that plump appearance.



Skin care is simple really, just add water. Sometimes I like to drink water, you know to surprise my liver. I’m just kidding, I drink water all day every day. It was a challenge for me at first to consistently drink water daily. I started setting alarms for times during the day where I would need to stop what I’m doing and drink water. This eventually helped with my consistency and now I can’t get enough. There are so many benefits to it, but one of my favorites is that it literally keeps your body hydrated. When your body is dehydrated your blood begins to turn acidic and your body is unable to rid itself of toxins. When more and more toxic particles gather in the body our cells deteriorate and die. This can cause hair to fall out, skin to sag, energy to drop and so much more. A few of the amazing benefits of water are:


1. Water helps the appearance of smooth skin.


2. Water helps reduce exhaustion and keeps energy up.


3. Water helps the immune system to function.


4. Water helps with maintain your weight.

- Recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily (8 oz. glass).


Eat healthy, exercise, sleep and repeat. By exercising you're increasing blood flow which helps nurture the skin cells and keep them lively. With sleep, your body repairs and recovers (making new collagen, the stuff that stops skin from sagging) while you're out like a light. There's a thing called 'beauty sleep' for a reason people. It is recommended to get 7 – 9 hours of sleep nightly. Ever heard of “You are what you eat”? Well this is very true, because what you put into your body reflects on your skin. If you are eating highly processed foods, your skin will lack the suppleness and strength that you want to see. For example, eating enough protein helps make the amino acids in your body that make collagen (strong skin) and elastic tissue (supple skin). Love yourself enough to live a healthy lifestyle.


I’m a firm believer in if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup. Make sure you are loving your skin and committing to take care of it. Just remember, skin care is essential so make good choices.
